General Picnic Information

Picnics are permitted in all City of Walnut Creek parks unless otherwise prohibited by signs posted at the site. There are group picnic areas available for reservation at Heather Farm Park and Larkey Park. All other picnic areas are available on a non-reservation, first-come/first-served basis. Reservation time: 7:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.

    Heather Farm Park is the largest Community Park in Walnut Creek, featuring a variety of activities and amenities. The park is home to Clarke Memorial Swim Center, Heather Farm Community Center, Walnut Creek Tennis Center and The Gardens at Heather Farm, and don't miss The Art & Wine Festival or The Walnut Festival each year at Heather Farm!

    • 10 tennis courts
    • 2 sand volleyball court
    • 1 skate park
    • 1 children's playground
    • 1 off-leash dog park
    • 5 softball fields
    • 1 soccer field
    • 1 basketball court
    • 1 fishing lake
    • 1 nature lake
    • 1 exercise par course

    Things to Know:
    • The park is open from dawn until dusk.
    • Amplified music, speaking, etc. may not be audible more than 50 feet from its source. 
    • Restrooms are available at Clarke Swim Center and at Ballfield #1.
    • Beer and wine are allowed at Heather Farm Park, but no glass is permitted.
    • There are drinking fountains throughout the park including in the children's play area.
    • Jump houses and inflatables are prohibited in all City of Walnut Creek parks.
    • Fishing is allowed ONLY in the cement pond and requires a valid fishing license issued by the California Dept of Fish & Wildlife.
    • Access to electricity and water is not available.
    • Tennis courts, softball fields and soccer fields require a separate reservation.

    Larkey Park is a wonderful Neighborhood Park in Walnut Creek with activities and amenities for the whole family. The park is home to Lindsay Wildlife Museum, a seasonal pool at the Larkey Swim Center, and the Walnut Creek Model Railroad Society.

    • Alcohol is NOT ALLOWED at Larkey Park.
    • Restrooms are available at the south side of the Lindsay Wildlife Museum building.
    • There are drinking fountains throughout the park including in the children's play areas.

    • Access to electricity and water is not available.
    • Tennis courts require a separate reservation.

    Booking a Group Picnic Area


    There are several ways you can book a group picnic area and obtain a permit. Reserved picnics are available up to 120 days in advance. If your chosen picnic date is more than four months away, you will not be able to book your picnic. Also, picnic areas must be booked at least five days prior to the event date.

    Please review the information in the brochure thoroughly before you book a picnic. There are NO REFUNDS for no shows or cancellations less than thirty (30) days prior to your event date. There is a $25 service fee for all cancellations or changes made more than thirty (30) days prior to your event date.



    Sand Volleyball Courts


    The sand volleyball courts at Heather Farm Park and Larkey Park can be booked with or without an accompanying picnic booking. If the courts are not reserved, they are available on a first-come/first-served basis. Note that the volleyball net is affixed to the poles, and you must bring your own volleyball. Sand volleyball courts are booked hourly with a 1-hour minimum and a 4-hour maximum. Fees are $30/hour.
