Walnut Creek Memorial Day Ceremony on May 29
WALNUT CREEK - The City of Walnut Creek will honor the memory of fallen service men and women, with a special focus on what it means to sacrifice, during its traditional Memorial Day observance ceremony on Monday, May 29. The free event begins at 10 a.m. Monday, May 29 at the gazebo in Civic Park, located at the corner of North Broadway and Civic Drive.
Captain Casey J. Brown, U.S. Army will be the keynote speaker. Captain Brown deployed to Tikrit, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 08-09 and Kunar, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 11-12. Captain Brown’s past assignments include Division Intelligence Operations Battle Captain, Chief Intelligence Planner for 25th Infantry Division, Battalion Senior Intelligence Officer, 3rd Brigade, 2-35 Infantry Battalion, and Instructor/Writer for the Military Intelligence Basic Officer Leader Course and the Military Intelligence Captains Career Course, 304th Military Intelligence Battalion. Captain Brown’s current assignment is as the East Bay Recruiting Company Commander.
His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (1OLC), Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal (two campaign stars), Iraq Campaign Medal (two campaign stars), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon with numeral “3”, NATO Medal, and Combat Action Badge.
The ceremony will include musical accompaniment by the Walnut Creek Concert Band under the direction of Harvey Benstein. Mayor Rich Carlston will open the ceremony and welcome community members and veterans in attendance. Reverend Dwane Michael will give the invocation and blessing, and the Pleasant Hill Army Recruiting Team will present the colors and close the ceremony with the traditional laying of the wreath at the Veterans Memorial Plaza across the street from Civic Park.
North Broadway will be closed to traffic between Civic Drive and Lincoln Avenue during the ceremony.
The annual Memorial Day ceremony is sponsored by the City of Walnut Creek as a way of thanking veterans and their families for their contributions, and remembering those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
