Veterans Day observance

  • Date: 11/11/2017 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
  • Introduction: Honor our veterans at a special ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11 at the Lesher Center for the Arts.

The City of Walnut Creek will pay tribute to veterans on Saturday, November 11 at 11 a.m. in the Hofmann Theatre at the Lesher Center for the Arts. The free ceremony is open to the public.

The keynote speaker is Mike Conklin, Chairman and CEO of the Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship Foundation.

The father of three Army Rangers, Conklin was inspired to reach out to severely injured veterans after one of his sons was wounded in Iraq in 2003.  Impressed by the level of care his son received in military hospitals, and deeply concerned over the plight of wounded warriors without families or community networks, Conklin founded the nonprofit Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship Foundation.

The foundation’s mission is to assist severely wounded post-9/11 veterans transition into civilian life while they attend college or vocational school.

Sentinels of Freedom Scholarships provide 2-4 years of support uniquely tailored to an individual veteran’s needs. Areas of focus include education, housing, mentoring, career and networking assistance, and financial.  Scholarship recipients are called “Sentinels” in honor of their sacrifice and commitment to guarding America’s freedoms.

Since its founding, more than 100 Sentinels have graduated from the Scholarship Program.

Conklin has been honored by military and community leaders ranging from California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger to Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates. In 2012, he was awarded the Department of the Army’s Outstanding Civilian Service Medal, and in 2013, he became one of CNN’s “CNN Heroes” for everyday people changing the world.

Mayor Rich Carlston will lead the Walnut Creek Veterans Day ceremony. Musical accompaniment will be provided by the Walnut Creek Concert Band under the direction of Harvey Benstein.
